Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas review
Costing $2.7 billion, the Wynn is a luxury hotel and casino resort located directly opposite the Fashion Show Shopping Mall. Unlike other Las Vegas hotels, it doesn’t have a theme – it just exudes class. Like a huge curving wave of glistening darkened glass, the Wynn is jaw-dropping. At 50 storeys tall, it’s one of the tallest buildings on the strip and covers 215 acres.Named after casino developer Steve Wynn and opened on April 28th 2005, the Wynn has 2,716 rooms and suites a 110,000 square feet casino, 22 restaurants, and an 18 hole luxury golf course (the Wynn Golf and Country Club).
Inside out design
The philosophy underyling the design of the Wynn is ‘inside out’ – that is, rather than a big flashy tourist display to attract you inside, the Wynn is deliberately understated (well, as much as a gigantic 50 storey glass building on Las Strip can be understated!), leading people to be drawn inside through curiousity more than awe.
And it works, too. No Egyptian Sphynx, Eiffel Tower or New York skyline is needed to draw your attention to the building. Its size, style, and the glorious greenery and lakes that surround it are enough to draw you in all by themselves. Of course, the waterfall, enormous moving sign and huge booming soundtrack that booms out as you soak in its splendour don’t hurt, either!When you do go in, you’re greeted by a strange site for Vegas – greenery! Trees, bushes and flowers immediately greet you, while outside lies gloriously landscaped grounds, complete with stunning waterfall, lakes and even a golf course. The bars are a great place to relax in, too, with greenery all around, uber-comfy seats, and bar staff that are as gorgeous as the building itself!
Wynn Attractions
The main attraction of the Wynn (apart from the opulence) is the large curtain waterfall behind a purpose-built mountain, feeding into a large lake. Images are displaye on the waterfall and lake, creating a show known as “the Lake of Dreams”. There’s a bar and viewing area called Parasol Up from which you can see this show over a beer, and some of the restaurants also offer views.Another feature is a display of Steve Wynn’s large art collection. Masterpieces from Van Gogh, Manet, and Cezanne are on display, as well as Picasso’s Le Reve, which Steve Wynn reportedly paid $42 million for!
Hotel, Casino and car dealership!
To give you an indication of the luxury of the Wynn, it also has its own Ferrari and Maserati dealership located on-site. In case you’re wondering just who’d buy a Ferrari or Masserati whlst on holiday, remember this is Vegas – people can occasionally win vast sums of money! If you’ve just beat the house, what better way for the house to get its cash back than to tempt you to spend that cash at the same hotel. Marketing genius!For those not lucky enough to scoop the jackpot, the Wynn also has its own car exhibition (the Penske-Wynn), featuring many of the world’s top supercars for people to drool over.

For the geeks amongst you, the Wynn is littered with high technology. Amongst its world records, include:- The first casino to combine the room key and the casino frequent-player card in one card
- The first casino to include a car (Ferrari-Maserati) dealership
- The world’s largest distribution of HDTV, into hotel rooms using high-speed Cat-6 ethernet cables
- The largest installation of Voice over IP technology for hotel phones
Location of the Wynn
The Wynn hotel is situated to the north of the strip, directly opposite the Fashion Show shopping mall. If you start walking south from the Stratosphere, you’ll come across old Vegas (The Sahara, Circus Circus, The Riviera and The Stardust), before abruptly meeting the new: The huge Fashion Show mall on your right, and the glorious Wynn on your left. After that, it’s new Vegas all the way, with The Venetian, Paris, Treasure Island and Caesar’s Palace just up the road.If it’s the grand hotels of Vegas that you’re looking for, the Wynn pretty much stands as the northerly tip of them, with the Mandalay Bay standing as the southerly tip (The Stratosphere is further north to the Wynn, but is a bit out of the way of the other major hotels).
Conclusion
The Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas is a stunning building, and a must-see resort should you go to Vegas. It’s main drawback is its price, but it is a luxury hotel, and compared with some of the older hotels such as Circus Circus, it’s almost from a different world. Besides, after a few days of Vegas, you’ll be amazed how seeing greenery again cheers you up! Neon’s all very well, but when you’ve been in the desert for a few days, trees, flowers and water are a welcome sight.
